Mastopexy (breast lifting) – surgical procedure designed to restore normal height of breasts and improve their size and contours. In some cases mastopexy may be performed on purpose to keep initial function (possibility of breast feeding). With the help of mastopexy it is also possible to reduce the size of the areola – the colored skin surrounding the nipple.
Omission of a mammary gland is the result of its weight, loss of skin elasticity, and also changes while the pregnancy period or considerable loss of weight (loss of volume with stretching of skin and omission of mamillar complex).
Planning the Surgery
Consulting your surgeon it is important to discuss your wishes and listen to what he says. Each patient, as well as each doctor, has different ideas about the desirable size and the breast form. The doctor should examine and measure your breasts, explain features of the surgery considering your age, skin condition, forms and size of a breast. It is necessary to discuss in advance where the mamillar complex is going to be moved. The surgeon should describe the procedure in details, explaining all possible restrictions and uncertainties. Be sure to ask all of the questions you have about breast lift surgery.
Preparation
The patient should be healthy (having no cold or other diseases).
It is necessary to pass medical inspection (analyses of blood, urine, electrocardiogram, x-ray, RW, HIV, HBS-Ag, the conclusion of the therapist, the gynecologist, the conclusion of the oncologist if necessary, and also anesthesiologist’s survey). 10 days before the surgery it is restricted to take medicines containing aspirin, vitamin E, lecithin. If you smoke, you should refrain from smoking. Overnight it is necessary to take a bath, easy dinner is allowed. You should be wearing no make-up, nail polish etc.
Mastopexy is usually performed while the patient is under general anesthesia. In certain cases, when a small incision is made, using local anesthesia in combination with demulcents is possible.
The surgery usually takes 1,5-4 hours. There exist several different techniques of breast lifting. Which one to chose depends on the initial breast condition and patient’s will. By the incision left after the surgery, there are: vertical scar technique, inferior pedicle technique (inverted-T), sub-areola technique (“invisible scar”). Each technique has its indications and post-surgery period. Mastopexy may be performed in combination with placement of breast implants for volume and form correction.
Post-Surgery Period
Staying in hospital after the surgery is done may take 2-3 days, and you can return to work not earlier than 1 week after the surgery. First 3-4 days it is not recommended to lift heavy object. There may be a slight fever. Once a week you should be examined by your doctor. The final result becomes visible in 4-6 months.
Possible Side Effects
Temporal:
Discomfort or painful sensations, decrease of sensitivity of some parts, asymmetry, delayed wound healing.
Permanent:
Scars, altered nipple sensation, nipple and areola complex changes. Scars after mastopexy surgery are usually bigger than scars after any other surgeries on breasts. They often remain rough and reddish within months, and then become less noticeable turning into thin white lines. The final result of surgery depends not only on skill of the surgeon, but also on obeying to all of instructions and recommendations of the doctor and specific features of the patient.
